Juvéderm® Informationin June of 2006, Juvéderm® dermal fillers became the first long-lasting (9 to 12 months) HA (hyaluronic acid) injectable gels to be FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm injectable gel is a “next-generation” smooth consistency gel dermal filler that helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds - the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth), “marionette lines” (oral commissures) vertical lip lines (perioral lines) and chin wrinkles. It can also be used in lips and other areas on the face. Juvéderm comes in two formulations - Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Ultra Plus. Juvéderm Ultra is not as concentrated as Juvéderm Ultra Plus. What is Juvéderm®Juvéderm is an injectable gel that is made out of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in all people. Juvéderm is biocompatible which means that no skin testing is required prior to receiving an injection of Juvéderm. To correct wrinkles Juvéderm is injected under the wrinkle or fold. Juvéderm improves the appearance by lifting and adding volume to the wrinkles and folds in the treatment area. After six to twelve months, the biocompatible compound is absorbed into the body. Juvéderm® Side Effects and RecoveryMost side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (usually 3 to 7 days). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injections site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures there is a risk of infection. The Juvéderm® ProcedureJuvéderm injections are performed in our office, usually without anesthesia. However, a numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area if you'd like (this will extend the visit an additional 15-30 minutes). Patients may experience some minimal discomfort from the needle injection. The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes up to half an hour, depending on the scope of treatment. Generally, patients are able to leave the office shortly after the treatment is complete. The selection of injection points is the key to a successful procedure. The points of injection are first identified. Dr. Bernstein may select numerous injection points for each location to be treated. Dr. Bernstein will then determine the amount of Juvéderm she will use at each injection point for the procedure. Antiseptic is applied and the Juvéderm is injected into the into the mid to deep dermis at the identified injection points beneath the skin. Results are usually visible within one week and last from six months to one year.
